Touching Base with the Kams

Festival of Summer Voices, Gondwana Choirs, National Choirs, National Choral School, News, Performances

Last December Sydney Children’s Choir singer Gabriel Kam, 17, and his parents, Justin and Helena, lost their home in the Black Summer fires.

Gabriel’s fellow choristers rallied behind him, raising money for the family. The Sydney Children’s Choir choristers found the piece The Ground, by Ola Gjeilo, and wanted to perform it for the Kams and their Balmoral community. COVID-19 hampered those plans, necessitating a Plan B: to film a video that recognised and supported the community through the power of song.

The rich choral texture of the work belies the fact that it was recorded under such unusual circumstances – every single chorister recorded their individual part in a studio. The choir visuals were made outdoors on the chorister’s property under COVID-safe guidelines.

The film clip will be released 11 December via our YouTube channel. In the meantime, hear more about the project via the media coverage below.
